CHAPTER 1
Daniel’s POV
I sat there in the restaurant with a bowl of noodles in front of me, the usual. It was like a routine for me - waking up, working, sitting down with my friends while we drink our pain away, and then I’d make my way here. Waiting for her to show up from the back, while she marks the end of her day to clean the tables!
It was a little creepy though, but I couldn’t have the courage to go to her and tell her who I really was. The day she figured out who I was, she’d fall for me for my money. She’ll spend time with me for my money, and make fake promises for just my money.
Because I was a Millionaire!
Yes, it was not that difficult to conceal yourself when being a Millionaire because I had done that multiple times. I’d just put on some glasses, look really shady, and get on my way as everybody would treat me as if I was some hobo living on the streets. Guess not?
Back to this woman!
I had been noticing her for a while, after the day I came to this restaurant for the first time ever with my colleagues. She was so kind, voice as sweet as honey. She took our orders politely while making sure that we were satisfied with the service and the meals in front of us. I was more than just impressed; there had been something about that woman.
She was so mesmerizing - everything about her was so graceful. Her long, luscious ginger hair made her stand out in a whole crowd. The freckles on her face complemented her personality so well, and she had these enchanting hazel eyes that would make a person get lost within her. Her hour-glass figure made her look gorgeous, as she pulled off the attire of a waitress so well. I had never seen a woman as beautiful as her.
All the women around me had been there just for my money - just so they could get some out of me. They didn’t have any interest in who I really was, yet they’d fake it, just so they could be around me. Nobody understood who I was, and nobody even tried to because if I’m a Millionaire, I wouldn’t need all of that, right?
Wrong.
The moment I saw this woman, she gave me a genuine toothy smile that almost made my heart flutter. I had never seen someone smile that perfectly. When she talked to me, just to take my order, she was being so polite and kind as if it had been in her nature.
Maybe that was just her job.
But she was so different.
Yet, it felt like I had seen her somewhere.
I just couldn’t remember where.
When she was just finishing her job behind the counter, she came outside and started cleaning the tables. I kept looking at her subtly, as she gracefully bent down a little and started doing her thing. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t stop looking at her. There was something so eerily familiar about that woman, and it was making me go crazy how I couldn’t pinpoint that out.
That’s when she decided to stand right in front of me, smiling curiously, as she asked, “Is there something wrong with your noodles, sir?”
That’s when I snapped back into reality.
“M-My noodles?”
She chuckled, “The plate in front of you, sir. Is there anything wrong with it? Well, because you haven’t touched it at all.”
God, even her laugh was so perfect.
“No, they’re fine. I was just… waiting for somebody but they never arrived.” I looked up, locking eyes with her and that alone had made me feel all jittery. What was wrong with me? I was so lonely.
“Got stood up for a date?” Her eyes twinkled when she smiled, proceeding to clean my table.
My gaze went over the soft skin on her chest, and as she bent, I could even smell her perfume. No matter how hard I tried to look cool and calm, I was freaking out. This woman that I fancied, she was
bent right in front of me and I could see her cleavage.
My mind was literally everywhere, and I forgot that I hadn’t answered her question.
“Nevermind I asked then,” She smiled nervously, realizing that she was perhaps making conversation with someone who didn’t want to talk.
She wasn’t wrong.
I wanted to do so much more than just talk.
“No, you’re right. Got stood up on a date,” I chuckled nervously, licking my lips as I saw her eyes drop down on my mouth and then go right back on my eyes.
“I’m sorry. Do you want me to pack your noodles?” She proceeded to clean the tables next to mine, looking at me briefly as she asked.
Fearing that she would go away, and that I wouldn’t be able to talk to her, my head shot up as I softly yelled, “No!”
She looked up at me, confused and shocked at my reaction over something so casual. Way to make an impression. Now she probably thinks I’m crazy.
“I mean, I wanna eat right here. You have a cozy ambiance in this restaurant,”
I didn’t lie entirely; I wanted to eat her there if that counted.
“Well, I’m glad you like it here.” She smiled, making her dimples pop out. It made my heart flutter.
Jesus, what was wrong with me?
When she turned around, and rested her palms on her waist, that was when I met her hazel eyes. They took me deep inside nostalgia, as I remembered a girl I used to know who had the exact same color orbs.
Suddenly feeling very thirsty, I asked her for a glass of water.
My mind went back to the incident that had happened a few years ago.
“Please, stop this. I don’t have anything else to give you,” I heard a woman sob making me turn around the corner and saw her sitting on the floor while two men circled her. One had already snatched her bag, and the other was standing there with a gun on her forehead.
“You have her,” The man pointed at the little girl behind her mother, weeping as she held onto her tightly, “You could give her to us, and we’d be on our way. She’s so sweet, after all…”
“No! You can kill me but I won’t let you take my daughter, you filthy swine!” The mother cried, yelling as she spat on his face. That angered the man, which made him growl before hitting her with the butt of his gun.
I couldn’t just stand and keep watching, so without thinking, I jumped into action and head butt straight into their backs which made them lose control and fall over for a minute.
The mother stood back up, hoping to run away with her daughter but when she did, the man had already shot his gun. It hit her straight on the head, making her fall down while her daughter shrieked in agony. The gunman then pointed his gun at the girl head.
While running towards her, I stepped on a bracelet with the name Martha written on it. I figured that it was the woman’s, so I picked it up and ran to save the girl. I dived at the gunman as he was about to shoot the girl in the head. His gun fired of a shot as I impacted on him hitting her on the arm. Soon, many people started gathering around the two men and the struggle to push them back down had begun. The men had started shooting aimlessly, hitting a few more people before the police had come around the block.
The girl had tears in her eyes, as she held the bracelet close to her heart while struggling to breathe properly. I kept her in the corner in order to keep her safe, as I brought her in my embrace. She didn’t refuse it. She let me hold her, while I felt closer and closer to her. She was so broken and I felt as if I could relate to her at that moment. I wish I could have comforted her more, but I couldn’t. She looked at me with her teary hazel eyes, as if silently expressing her gratitude. My heart felt empty when she left.
As she was being taken to the hospital, she accidentally dropped the bracelet but I was quick to pick it up.
I kept the bracelet with me ever since. It’s as though it has guided and protected me over the years.
When I came back from my flashback, the waitress had already put a glass of water in front of me.
She couldn’t be the same girl, right?
That would be a very weird coincidence. Nah, that’s crazy thinking…
I tried to find that girl when I left town soon after that incident, but I was a teenager and couldn’t do much.
The waitress had already left when I came back from my flashback, probably left the restaurant because her shift was now over. My noodles were now stale; I didn’t want it anymore. I hurried out of the restaurant in hopes that maybe I could catch her in time.
She was just around the corner, waiting for a bus when I saw her standing there in her yellow raincoat as the rain started pouring down from the clouds above.
I was already soaking when I approached her, while she gave me a look that clearly showed that she was creeped out now.
She pretended to ignore my existence.
“Can I drop you home?”
She looked at me, bewildered by what I had just asked her.
“What?”
“If you don’t mind, can I drop you home?” I put a hand on my head in order to stop the rain from blurring my view through the fake glasses I was wearing.
“I don’t get in the car with strangers,”
I chuckled, internally smirking at her lack of knowledge, “I’m no kidnapper,”
“I can’t trust you like that,” She huffed, turning to face the road.
“Do I look like a kidnapper to you?”
“You look mysterious... And are kinda creepy, no offense.” She gave me a lopsided grin, as she shifted her weight on the other leg while anxiously tapping her foot
“Look, the bus doesn’t look like it’s going to arrive. I can drop you home, safely. Please take my word,” I emphasized on my sentences, as the winds started blowing aggressively and the rain started getting harsher than it was five minutes ago.
She looked at me for a minute after looking back at the road, checking if the bus was coming or not.
Then she looked back at me, biting her lip as she said, “I have pepper spray if you try to rape me, I’m not as harmless as I look, okay?”
Precious!
“I won’t hurt you. Can we please go now?”
We both made our way towards my car that was parked across the street, and when she saw my brand new and sleek car, she gulped down nervously.
She sat inside the car when I opened the door for her, anxiously trying to clean the water that was on the car seat. I shut the door, making my way to the driver’s seat as I looked at her sitting uncomfortably.
“Is something wrong?”
“No… I just, nothing.” She put a strand of hair behind her ear, not making direct eye contact with me as I put my keys in the ignition and started the car.
I asked her where she wanted to be dropped off, and when she told me where it was, I figured it was a couple of blocks away from where we were right now.
She looked like she felt out of place, glancing at me occasionally but focused on the road. Probably to see if I was going to the right place and not taking her somewhere else!
When I arrived at her destination, she spoke up, “I’m sorry for any inconvenience caused. Is there anything I can do for you?”
“Can we meet again?”
She hesitated, but looked up at me and nodded, “Olivia,”
What a beautiful name.
“Daniel,”
When she walked away after saying goodbye and exchanging names, I figured that this could potentially be the start of us.
CHAPTER 2
Olivia’s POV
I got off work late that night, but I hadn’t realized that there would probably be no bus around for another few hours. Luckily, Daniel had offered to drop me home and I safely reached my home without having to walk all the way.
Trust me, I had walked home before in extremely bad weather and it was not a nice stroll around the block. It was absolutely terrifying.
I still didn’t have enough funds to buy myself a car. Hell, I was s
truggling to pay my own rent.
I lived in a really small apartment - it ended as soon as it started. There was a small bedroom with a bathroom attached, a pathetic excuse of a lounge and a balcony. I used to spend most of my day on the balcony, because the view outside had been the only good thing about my apartment. You could see a field full of dandelions and sunflowers, although from far, and since there was no road outside, the balcony place had been calm and perfect to relax on after a shitty day at work.
I worked as a waitress in a restaurant that had been underpaying me because I desperately needed the job to survive. My boss was abhorrent; on many days, I had felt like spitting in his cup of coffee. I had acted on it too, many times. He would harass us, pay us late even though he was paying less and he would overwork us. I had been trying to find a way to get rid of this job somehow, but the economy was in recession and clearly there were many homeless people readily available to take my job.
